Welcome!!

Hi! I'm Mike Victa. Artist, aspiring author, and practicing Geek. Thank you for stopping by my Geeky little corner of the internet. Here you will find my artwork, photographs, and senseless ramblings from my cluttered mind. I hope you enjoy your stay. Make yourself at home. :)

Legendary

This week has been filled with inspiration. One quote from author G.K. Chesterton really hit home. “Fairy tales are more than true; not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten."

Dark Times Potter

My weekend of writing was hijacked by a Harry Potter Marathon on cable. So, here's what was floating around in my head.

Kira and Fizzgig

Tried most of last night trying to get this right. Used up several full pages in my sketchbook before I gave up and just did this on the Cintiq. The nap after a day at the office probably helped too.

Prowl Jr.

Crashed hard this afternoon with a migraine which means of course that I'm wide awake now. Finished some work on the book earlier today and decided to do a quick one of this since a friend requested it. Now I think I'll try to sleep!

Mystery Sketch Theater - Harry Potter Night!

Fun Harry Potter night at Mystery Sketch Theater. This time I actually scored some swag! 10 points for Gryffindor indeed! Thanks to our model Brooke White for picking my sketch as one of her 5 favorites from among all the awesome pieces there. Be sure to check them out on Facebook and come out next time.

Slow and Steady

Third draft and more thumbnails revised for the first issue. 7 years in the making and I'm still tweaking. I want it to be perfect. Made some nice headway today which is good since that deadline is fast approaching. Started on some character designs which have changed considerably since the early days. I like it a lot more now. Tweets and Facebook post from friends at Dragon-Con are pushing me. Man that looked like a good time. Wish I was there but glad I'm here and working. Just a few months to go and this isn't even the hardest part yet! I think I'm going to need a new coffee maker...

Back on track.

After 2 months of being busy with life and a much needed adventure to the West Coast, I'm back to work. Just a few days ahead of schedule. I've written a few things in the past but never had to write for a comic book before. The pacing is a little different from what I'm used to. Still, I think I left Issue 1 on a nice "what the??" moment that will hopefully keep people interested enough to see Issue 2. Thumbnails drawn. Time for some model sheets before starting the pencils.

The Celebrate! Project- Sea Serpent Day

This is a drawing I did for my friend and his latest project called The Celebrate! Project. It was clearly for "Sea Serpent Day". He is taking the entire year to celebrate our nation's more unique holidays. The tag line? "One Idiot. One Year. 365+ Holidays." One year yes. Most certainly 365+Holidays. One Idiot? Nah! Just one man and a dream. Head over to the project page via the provided link above to follow along all year long!

I'll save you Kimmy!!!!!!

I was watching the "old" movie Titan AE the other night and remembered another Don Bluth epic Space Ace. Then this happened.

Prime Time Tee

I've added the Optimus piece to my Redbubble shop. Grab one if you like it to have a nice shirt that no one else will have at the movies. Also check out some of the other artist posting their work there.  Lots of great stuff!

That's Just Prime!

Finished up a little project in honor of Transformers: Dark of the Moon. Had a lot of fun with this one. Added a few things just for fun below. Hope you all enjoy.

First up, here is a little time-lapse video of me working on the pencils for this one.

Here are the pencils.

After that it was off to Photoshop for some colors.

For this next part you'll need to find yourself a set of these.

This set comes packed with a smallish Optimus Prime figure.  Part of a preview figure set available at most stores. If you can't find this set, any pair of old skool 3D glasses should work just fine.
Enjoy! Transformers: Dark of the Moon is in 3D too after all.

The Original Tea Party Activist!!

Took a while to decide which way to go with this one and finally decided to just do my own take on the Mad Hatter. 2 days of being sick with a migraine and this is what comes out.

Megacon 2012!!

For those that know me well, you know I have always wanted to attend Megacon as an artist.  Every year I get to meet some amazing artists and leave feeling completely inspired. Yet, every year I leave saying I will return next time as an attending artist and never follow through. This year, with some encouragement from good friends, I am actually doing it. Hope to see you all there next year.

Follow the link and check out the other artists attending.

Mike

P.S.  Thanks to all those who encouraged me to finally do this.  You know who you are. :)

Redbubble Shop now OPEN!

In a shameless attempt to get my work out there, I've opened a shop on Redbubble. There are some great pieces up there from a whole bunch of other artists.  If you haven't checked them out, please do so.

You can access my page by clicking on the link below, or on the link on the right side of this page.

Thanks!  Hope you enjoy!

Mike

There be Dragons!

This one I dug up from my laptop too but it's actually a watercolor that's hanging on my wall.  I did this while in the Bahamas for work on a sheet of random paper I had with me.

More Oldies but Goodies!

Adding a few things I found on my laptop.

The Dark Lord Returns

Something just for fun.  I'm sure someone out there has done this before but I couldn't find one so I made one myself!

Thor 1.1

I wasn't completely happy with the way this one looked before so I moved his arm.

TMNT

But which one is it?  You decide. Another quick watercolor and marker sketch.

The BatMan

A quick marker and watercolor sketch from my sketchbook today.

The Might THOR!

Something for the ladies today.  This time it's actually Thor.
Please don't drool on the screen ladies.  You might hurt yourselves.
Colors to follow soon. Enjoy.

The Mighty Tor

No no.  Not THOR.  Tor.  The short lived yet awesome 80s Cartoon Mighty Orbots was one of my favorites.

Pure Inspiration

Please check out this piece from Ryan Woodward. In this short film he captures our craft in it's purest and innocent form. Amazing.

Ryan Woodward's "Thought of You"

Ryan also has a great book available to purchase as a digital download on gesture and figure drawing.

Enjoy!

A Super Girl

Was thinking today.  I know, shocker... and remembering back to all the old doodles in my various school books, notebooks, and homework papers when I was a kid and realized that for the most part, I never really drew comic book characters.  It's not like I wasn't into them.  Sure, like every kid I ran around with a bandana safety pinned to the back of my shirt and launched myself off of the nearest piece of furniture, but most of my sketches and doodles were of Star Wars characters, various mecha from Macross, astronauts and space shuttles, and Transformers.  So I guess it's good that I've been tackling some characters of the Super Hero variety.

A few weeks ago my favorite Gotham Redhead made her way into my sketchbook.  This time, her Blonde neighbor from Metropolis makes a visit.

Enjoy.

Joking Around

I realized that I have never drawn the Joker. So here's a quick try. I was too lazy to get out of bed to get my stylus, so I "finger painted" this one.

Doodling. Coloring.

Starting to sketch out characters for a project that's been sitting on my shelf for way too long.

Four Brothers. Four Turtles. Trained as Ninjas. Drawn with charcoal.

First Time working non Digital in about 5-6 years.  Charcoal with an ink wash. I honestly can't remember the last time.  Had to push through this one.  More to come.  Feels good to get one finished finally.

First steps back

So I broke out the old charcoal this weekend.  Have to admit that I like working digital but there is something nice about getting your hands a little dirty and working with something so analog.  Now if I can only remember that my hands are filled with charcoal so I don't get it all over the house!  Oops.  Later tonight, the paints come out!
